Portland State University: Offer 10 scholarships to Syrian students
We call on Portland State University to provide at least 10 scholarships to Syrian students for upcoming classes. We also call on PSU to join the Syria Consortium and encourage other institutions to join by raising awareness about the plight of Syrian students. We also call on leaders of the international community to take action to protect school and students in Syria, by whatever means necessary.

I write this appeal to you in hope that you will act upon my request. I have presented this to you as it is inline with your Strategic Plan, Vision and Mission Statement. I realize that you are all aware of the intention and goals of the University but I include it here so you may reflect upon your own words as you read my petition to you.
Your vision for PSU:
“Portland state leads the way to an equitable and sustainable future through academic, urban engagement, and expanding opportunity.”
Your four main points of the mission statement:
“We serve and sustain a vibrant urban region through our creativity, collective knowledge and expertise. We are dedicated to collaborative learning, innovative research, sustainability and community engagement. We educate a diverse community of lifelong learners. Our research and teaching have global impact.”
Here is my petition to you:
Millions of Syrian high school graduates and college students are unable to pursue their dream of a college degree. Thousands of schools have been destroyed, unfairly depriving Syrian students from their right to education. Millions of Syrian students are now refugees, with no nearby school. And millions more are to afraid to go to school because a bomb could fall on the school at any time.
While host countries and the UNHCR can provide primary education to Syrian children, the young Syrian men and women pursuing a higher education face a much more difficult task. With language, logistical, and financial barriers to overcome, these students are unable to continue their education without institutional assistance.
We are calling on Portland State University to join the Syria Consortium to offer scholarship opportunities for Syrian students. The Syria Consortium, created by the International Institute of Education (IIE) has brought together 40 universities who commit to offer Syrian students and scholars a safe haven to continue their studies abroad.
Portland State University accepts over 28,000 students every year, offering many generous scholarships. As students of Portland State University, we think that at least 10 scholarships should go to Syrian refugees who would otherwise have no education. We hope that Portland State University can be a leader to universities around the world by offering these Syrian refugee students a second chance at getting their education.
Please act upon my appeal to you. It is on the Portland State Website on Global Diversity that over one million was raised for student success. I know the University cares about student success as you have helped me. Please extend your opportunities to include Syrian students.
